The Prescott Valley Police Department encourages you to enjoy a great holiday season.

Travel Tips: Leave early to avoid the holiday rush, especially if driving long distances. Plan ample time for your trips and make adequate stops for breaks. Plan your fuel stops so you won’t be stranded in a location where there are no fuel stations. Lock your vehicle at every stop, even if just for a minute. Don’t leave your pets in the car unattended.

Vacation Safety: Notify the post office and newspapers of absences. Advise a trusted neighbor to watch out for your home. Ask the Police Department for a Vacation Watch (928-772-9261). Use light timers, radios, and TVs for that “we’re at home” atmosphere.

Kitchen Tips: Make sure to monitor the stove, oven, and candles during all family commotion and assistance in the kitchen. Be sure to place carving knives out of the reach of small children. Avoid wearing long sleeves or jewelry that may get caught on pots or oven racks while cooking, causing spills, burns, or even fires. Have a working fire extinguisher near all cooking areas. Make sure all smoke detectors are working.

Turkey Safety: Avoid salmonella by thawing the turkey in the refrigerator, not on the counter. When thawing turkey, allow one day per four to five pounds. If thawing in cold water, make sure your bird is in leak-proof packaging, and change the water every thirty minutes. Wash hands and utensils often, using soap and water. Cook turkey until the meat thermometer reads at least 165 degrees. Cook stuffing separately, not inside the bird.

Pet Tips: Encourage guests not to feed the family pets leftovers or scraps, especially turkey bones. Keep chocolates out of your pet’s reach since they can be deadly. Secure trash containers to keep pets out. Find a quiet place for your pets during all the excitement and activity.

Shopping Tips: Always lock your car and keep packages and valuables out of plain sight or locked in your trunk. Use the buddy system and plan shopping during daylight hours. Do not wear expensive items, like jewelry, advertising your prominence. Carry minimal cash and credit cards.

The Prescott Valley Police Department wishes all residents and visitors a pleasant and happy holiday season!
