At the Library: New year and new beginnings | Arts & Entertainment

The beginning of the new year is a good time to try new things — from learning about healthier choices to trying your hand at some crafty projects.

The library offers over 120 programs for free, every month, for all ages. From ABCs for Babies, Family Storytimes, Young Readers Club to Book Discussion Clubs, Scavenger Hunts, Movie Nights and Saturday Matinees, Legos (for all ages) and Lego Builders (for adults), Crafting and Stitching Circles, Writers Groups, Open Mic Night, Community Cafes and Gaelic, French, and English Conversation Clubs. Plus, some special programs such as Yoga for Bigs and Littles with Annabelle, Music with Heather, Meditations with Louise, Heart Healthy Choices presentations by staff from the One Door Centre and Healthy Nutrition with Annabelle Cameron, RHN and more.

January is also Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, and we are pleased to be able to offer Memory Cafes Mondays at the Antigonish Library from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. beginning Jan. 22. Join us for a weekly drop-in program for people with dementia/Alzheimer’s, family, caregivers, friends, and anyone interested in exercising their brain. We will have fun games and activities to play together and light refreshments.

Please ask about transportation help. Sponsors include a Seniors’ Connect Grant from CommunityLinks, and the Nova Scotia Department of Seniors and Long Term Care. For more information, call the Antigonish Library at 902-863-4276. In addition, the Regional Library has a special Dementia-Friendly Memory Collection of books, games, kits and activities that are available to borrow from all of our PARL libraries.

Family Literacy Day is on January 27 but we feel that one day is just not enough. Join us for a friendly, fun Family Literacy Challenge that everyone can participate in until Jan. 27. Drop by your local library and pick up a challenge sheet, and complete five activities on the list for a chance to to win a prize package.

Trouble with new tech? Drop by the library, or give us a call to make an appointment with one of our Community Technology Engagement Assistants (Megan in Antigonish, Matt in New Glasgow, Jennifer in Pictou and Abby in River John). We’re happy to help! Matt’s Tea, Talk and Tech event returns to the New Glasgow Library on Jan. 26 at 10:30 a.m., for a presentation on tips about “Protecting your Online Security.” Abby will host a series of sessions on Thursday afternoons, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. — “SamePage Catalogue Basics” (Jan. 11) and “Meet the Libby App” (Jan. 18) at the River John Library.

And to wrap up the month on Jan. 31, we will offer a free public screening of the documentary Unsyncable at the Westville Library at 2:00 p.m. “Dive in with senior athletes in their sixties and beyond, making a splash as they hold back the hands of time and celebrate the beauty, strength and joy they have found in artistic (synchronized) swimming.”

Also on Jan. 31, join us at 7 p.m. for an author reading (online) with Book Club fan favourite Lesley Crewe. Lesley will read from her latest novel, Recipe for a Good Life. Get cozy, grab a warm drink and enjoy some heartfelt stories wherever you may be. All welcome.
