Another Dog Treat Brand Faces Recalls For an All Too Common Reason

So far in 2025, there have been around 15 recalls in the pet food industry, affecting dog and kitten food brands. Even cattle feed has been subject to recalls from earlier this year. Recently, multiple dog treat brands have voluntarily recalled their products due to contamination.

On October 3, a Midwestern brand issued a recall for its dog treats due to salmonella contamination, according to the Food and Drug Administration’s website.

Nature’s Own Pet Chews Bully Bites Recall

Best Buy Bones Inc., an all-natural dog treat manufacturer in Mount Morris, Michigan, issued a recall for its Nature’s Own Pet Chews Bully Bites due to potential Salmonella contamination. The voluntary recall affects four lots of the 1-pound treat bags. All bags have a September 2027 expiration date.

The affected lots are  19379, 19380, 19381, and 19382 from UPC#739598900750. The Bully Bites come in a 16-ounce plastic pouch, measuring 11-inches tall by 9.5-inches wide. Pet parents can find the best buy date of September 2027 on the base of the treat bag.

All lots came from Minnesota and were sold in Wisonsin retail stores after September 23. The company and the FDA suggest that you return the recalled products to the store where you purchased them.

“Do not sell or donate the recalled products,” advised the FDA. “Do not feed the recalled product to pets or any other animals. Wash and sanitize pet food bowls, cups, and storage containers. Always ensure you wash and sanitize your hands after handling recalled food or any utensils and surfaces that come in contact with recalled food.”

Salmonella Symptoms to Watch For

The Bully Bites may contain Salmonella, which can make pets and their humans sick. According to the company’s announcement, pet parents with possible Salmonella exposure should look for symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramping, fever, diarrhea, and bloody diarrhea.

“Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms,” according to the release. If you find yourself experiencing any of these symptoms after touching or feeding your dog these treats, call your local healthcare provider immediately.

If your pets have eaten any of the treats, watch out for the following symptoms: lethargy, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and bloody diarrhea. Asymptomatic infected dogs can infect other dogs and people around them, making them sick. Call your veterinarian if your dog has eaten the Bully Bites and is showing symptoms.

The FDA discovered the contamination after testing samples that were collected on September 11, 2025. Samples tested positive for Salmonella contamination. While the company and the FDA investigate the cause of the contamination, Best Buy Bones has temporarily stopped production and distribution of the dog treat.

Thankfully, there have been zero reports of dogs getting sick from the treats as of the release date. If you suspect your dog has been exposed to Salmonella from these treats, you can report it to the FDA.
