Here are a few tips for keeping fleas away from your pet.

  1. Keep your home clean: One of the most important things to do is to keep your surroundings clean. If you have a garbage can, ensure that it is covered. Clean your house every week and change the bed sheet often. Vacuum your home and wash the curtains and carpets. You also need to ensure that the pet’s bed is vacuumed regularly. Keeping your home clean will reduce the chances of fleas. If you have a garden, you need to mow the lawn and keep it clean at all times. In case your pet spends a lot of time outdoors, you will have to ensure that the garden area is clean and the yard is mowed regularly.
  2. Use pesticides regularly: Even if you keep your home and garden clean at all times, there is no guarantee that there will be no flea infestation. You need to use pesticides from time to time to kill away pests. Do not pick up any random pesticide from the market as it could harm the pet. Ask your vet about the best products to use and treat your home with the same. Learn about the application of the pesticide and ensure that you treat your home at the start of summer.
  3. Maintain cleanliness of the pet: Apart from your home, you also need to maintain cleanliness of the pet. If your pet is not bathed regularly and he spends a lot of time outdoors, there are higher chances of a flea infestation. You need to use flea combs to remove the ticks and fleas from its fur. Bathe the pet from time to time and keep them clean. Use a flea treatment shampoo and use it twice or thrice a month in order to save your pets from fleas.
  4. Use approved products: Always keep in mind to use medicated products that meet the requirements of International standards. Pest treatment products are available in sprays, powders, and dips. You need to choose the one that is convenient and safe for the pet. Consider the preferences of your pet before choosing a product. If you are a first-time pet owner, you should speak to the vet and gain information about the best products to use on the dog. If your dog is pregnant, allergic or sick, do not use any products without the advice of the vet. You should also keep in mind that the products for cats and dogs are very different. You should never use the same products on them. Keep your safety in mind and wear gloves when you apply the medication. If you notice any strange behavior of the dog after application of the medication, you need to speak to the vet.

Always keep in mind that this is not a one time treatment. You will have to be prepared to fight the fleas throughout the year. You also need to keep in mind that the fleas will not be eliminated with a single treatment; you will have to repeat the treatment from time to time. You need to look for signs from your pet, if you notice any change in their behavior, you need to check for fleas and start the treatment. Your vet will be able to guide you through the same. If there are excessive fleas on the body of your pet, you need to take the pet to your vet immediately. Once your pet accepts the medication you use on them, there will be nothing to worry. You can continue using the same medication for the future and follow the same method of application. Keep in mind that you do not use very old products as they may not be effective for long. Purchase new flea treatment products every year and use them efficiently.
