For Alfy

A little friend on tiny feet
One that I was glad to meet
A cheeky face and glowing eyes
A rescue dog, his mother's pride
I knew you'd lived a happy life
Far from early pain and strife
So long ago, at one month old
Moonflower took you into the fold
She nurtured you with caring hands
Including you in all her plans
You saw the wounded as they came
One by one, lost, stranded, lame
You gave them courage, shared your space
Your toys and food, your quiet place
You watched them heal with love and care
Knowing you had once been there
And through it all your days were bright
With kindness, fun and peaceful nights
You felt the warmth of family ties
And knew your trust was recognised
Days rolled past to golden years
Tonight our smiles turn to tears
For you have journeyed to the rainbow's end
And over the bridge you will meet old friends
You will know who needs a gentle paw
For you have been at danger's door
You know how it feels when the world seems blue
Because you rescued the lonely too
A dog in a million, a warrior soul
If only time didn't take its toll
You will never be forgotten, your heart lives on
For those you loved, a special bond
Sleep safe little Alfy, a blessing of joy
And know that your spirit is with us sweet boy.

' What's It All About ...? Alfy !'

A book of poetry created by Elaine & Rod Remnant-Ashton has been launched this month,  to raise funds for the care of the animals on Jollity Farm, a small shelter in Gerrans, Cornwall where Mary Alice and her husband Chris rescue displaced, unwanted and animals who were doomed for slaughter.
Jollity Farm provides sanctuary for them,  for the rest of their natural lives.

The book is a collection of poetry and prose, written by friends of animals
from around the world.
Authors penned their thoughts on a wide variety of subjects concerned with animal welfare and rights, including contributions from actress Melita Morgan, Agent For Change, The Scary Guy, singer/songwriter Maria Daines, writers Mark David Hatwood, Frank. E. Bittinger and many more.

Mary Alice said the book is dedicated to the memory of her beloved rescue dog Alfy, who passed away earlier this year just before his 18th Birthday.
'It's a testament to the united love and compassion people feel for animals, and I hope it will help to make people a little more aware of the plight of sentient beings in society today.
I wanted this book to have a little something for all age groups and I'm very pleased to say, with the help of some wonderful talents and caring people, it is just that !'

In days gone by, the dog ran wild, untamed and free.
Although man may have tamed your bodies,
we have never tamed your spirit.
You are free now.
Go and run with your pack,
with your wild ancestors, racing by the midnight moonflower.
Go and hunt for your prey,
taking what is your birthright.
Join the wolf, the jackal, the wild dogs,
and run with your kin on the wild hunt.
Run, and guide your spirit home.

A Prayer For Alfy
From Rick

Eternal Spirit, we bring you our grief in the loss of Alfy and ask for courage to bear it.
We bring you our thanks for Alfy who lived among us and gave us freely of his love.
We commit our friend and companion Alfy into your loving hands.
Give us eyes to see how your love embraces all creatures and every living thing speaks to us of your love.
Amen

Ode for Archie
By Mark David Hatwood

I used to know a doggie, and Archie was his name.
A tiny little grey thing, with red cloth round his mane,
Although a little charmer, his eyes, as he got old
were nothing short of useless, but that won't stop the bold!

I've got a little story, but first I must explain,
Although his real name's Alfred, that label never came.
Instead, another title would spill forth from my lips,
I'd always call him Archie, (although it's quite remiss).

So now, my little story, about old Archie's love,
Lost age or sight won't matter, if some girl fits the glove!
And on this one occasion, when we moved in next door
Old Archie smelt our Totty - a dog with such amour!

The timing's all he needed, to plan this great escape,
And no one saw it coming  alas, a big mistake.
With months of secret planning, it finally came to pass,
His mum was gone, the weather right, and nothing in his path.

He bumped on through the kitchen, then stumbled 'cross the lawn,
He bumped along the fence-posts, until a hole was born.
Now in the neighbour's garden  a place he'd never seen,
He had to find the back door  a place he never been!

If that not just amazing, there's more I must confide,
He had to find the cat-flap, and bump his way inside!
But Archie won't be beaten, when chasing Totty's scent,
And so he stuck his nose through and made the great ascent

A little while later, his mum came wandering home,
And when she found no Archie, her world took on a frown.
She searched the house all over, and then the garden through,
But nowhere could she find him not even in the loo!

The desperation heightened, the panic setting in,
She took to checking places she knew he'd ever been.
Eventually, in panic, she rapped upon our door,
But no one came to answer, 'cus we weren't back 'till four.

To check we weren't just sleeping, she pressed her nose to pane,
And there, to her amazement, was something quite insane!
Old Archie, warm and cosy, was snuggled up beside
his newest girlfriend, Totty, and both were almond-eyed.

The moral of the story? Well next time someone says
"You can't teach old dogs new tricks", just sit and smile away.
Cus Archie showed us one thing; that love is all you need,
So plan your dreams like Archie and, one day, you'll succeed!

Sleep softly ....

I am with you.

I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying, You found it hard to sleep.
I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,
"It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."

I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,
You were thinking of the many times, your hands reached down to me.
I was with you at the shops today, Your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.

I was with you at my grave today, You tend it with such care.
I want to reassure you, that I'm not lying there.
I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said "it's me."

You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.
I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.
It's possible for me, to be so near you everyday.
To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."

You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew ...
in the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.
The day is over... I smile and watch you yawn and say "goodnight,
I'll see you in the morning." And when the time is right.---

Then you will cross the brief divide,
I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side.
I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out ... then come home to be with me.

I was thinking of my last pet and friend Little Bit, a siberian husky mix with light brown eyes and soft black and white hair, that passed on last year and wrote this about her...

In my mind

As I sit here in my room,
Silent thoughts I do consume.
Where all the answers seldom come,
They hide in shadows that make me numb.

And in my mind, I want to scream,
All my thoughts are but a dream.
Noiseless sounds that shout to me,
Of visions that I'll never see.

As the rain keeps falling down,
With it's steady pounding sound.
Can't even wash away these dreams,
And send them down prismatic streams.

All the colors have left my mind,
Lines of contrast misaligned.
There's a fog, its hard to see,
Masking....my reality.

Above all that, the cold is here,
With it's kiss it brings a tear.
Remembering on a day like this,
A loving soul, I truly miss.

Dear Alfy,

You were just a little baby when I met you first in Greece. You were so
lovely, that you stole my heart, just as Mary's heart, immediately. Always
lovely and sometimes naughty in a lovely way.I still remember Mary telling
you 'Alfy stammata', what she only did when you were speaking too loud. By
the time you became Sir Alfy, I'm sure Mary didn't tell you to 'stammata'
anymore. Because, after all, you were a Sir and always will be Sir in my
memory. Love you always and thank you so much for the lovely time I was
able to spend with you and Mary.

Love you, Yvonne
