A Friend of The Animals Who lives in a bullfighting area !
**************
If you go down in the ring today
You'll never believe your eyes
The bulls are being knifed and speared
By men who tell us lies

A man they call the matador
Will take their lives away
And the audience will cheer
As they enjoy their killing day

The horses will be terrified
But forced to face the bull
Whilst horns are tearing at their side
And riders scream and pull

If you go down in the ring today
You'd better close your eyes
And plug your ears with Dynamite
To drown their desperate cries  !!

*************
" It was as a teenager I was first introduced to the exploitation of bulls and horses in bullrings around the world. However it was not until the mid 1970's, after I was introduced to a wonderful man, Freddy Weirs (Head of International Council Against Bullfighting UK), that I developed a passion and need to 'educate the world' about the real facts about bullfighting and what a fraud the way it is presented to the tourists as 'entertainment' or 'art'  !
It is, as you will learn, nothing but a cowardly slow and sadistic torturing to death of an animal.!
Within a few short months, I became Canadian / US representative of ICaB and started to work via the media,
aiming the campaign towards educating tourists !
It was always the aim of Freddy to make a film which exposed the bullfight for what it really is, and in 1981 we did just that.
Thanks to a dear friend, and film photographer, we were able to capture scenes from the opening festivals in Madrid and with his precious time, music, editing and the narration donated, our film
THE DANCE OF DEATH
was born "

The Dance of Death may be making a few people squirm in their seats today and it's no wonder.
The 25-minute documentary is playing Toronto's Festival of Festivals today at 12:30 p.m.
It is about bullfighting, and all things considered,
it is not a pretty sight.
That's why the associate producer says and Mary Petch - Mashinter ( Pollard ) should know. She has seen through the rough cut and has been following the production through its early stges more than a year ago.
'It's shocking even to me,' she was relating before the first official screening of the documentary. ' The first time I saw the footage I was horrified - and I was used to that kind of thing !'
Sponsored by The International Council Against Bullfighting, the film cost just under $10,000.00
' I hired filmmaker Ihor Macijiwsky. Soon after he boarded a plane bound for Madrid. After filming a week inthe city, the raw footage was brought back and the long process of post production began.  It became especially difficult since Mary had counted on Lorne Greene to do the voice-over narration, drawing closer to deadline, and still no confirmation, the associate producer had to look elsewhere.
Ed Asner is the man she found to do the job, but the footage proved to be so offensive he did the voice-over without the visual aid.
She agrees the documentary is controversial but she says it is presented in a straightforward, factual way.
' What it does is expose what a bullfight is all about ' .
The footage follows the course of  four bullfights and even contains exclusive footage of training sessions where old horses are used, maimed and finally killed; not to mention the slaughter of the bulls.
One of the reason's for the film is to dissuade tourists from going to bullfights out of curiosity, the producer says.
According to statistics, about 60 percent of the people who attend bullfights in Spain are tourists. Mary says she hopes the documentary will in time have international exposure .'

************

Thanks to such special people like our Freddy Weirs and Vicki Moore from FAACE, and ICaB's  Maria Elena Diaz from Mexico, I was rich in the information I needed to conduct a strong campaign
against bullfighting !
Sadly Freddy passed away, and that was the end of the ICaB .. wanting the best for this film, I passed it over into the hands of WSPA for them to take over, work with in order to give the film and it's purpose for being made, the exposure it deserved,
which they have !
Freddy Weirs  and Vicki Moore are no longer here with us, but the work for the horses and the bulls, victims of the fiesta, continues because of  many worth while and dedicated
organizations and individuals ,
And I, well I do what I can, when called upon to help.
And I hope you will join in the crusade to save
these animals from their tormentors !
These beautiful animals are forever in my heart !
To all the people who work so hard to stop this horrific spectacle
Thank You !
To you, the visitor, Going Abroad ?

Barcelona to be left without bullfights

Friday December 15, 2006

Madrid- Spain's second-biggest city Barcelona will be left without bullfights from 2008 onwards, the daily El Pais reported Friday. The company managing the 93-year-old Monumental bullring will close it over financial losses of more than 24,000 euros (31,500 dollars) per bullfight.

The region of Catalonia is known for its critical attitude towards the "national spectacle" the rest of Spain takes pride in, but the decision to close the bullring was taken by the company without interference from the city council, according to El Pais.

Deputy Mayor Jordi Portabella wants to convert the bullring into an open-air market.

The Barcelona city council adopted a motion expressing its opposition to bullfights in 2004. More than 20 Catalan municipalities have declared themselves "anti-bullfight," often closing their bullrings.

Polls show that over 70 per cent of Catalans back the abolition of the spectacle, said Manuel Cases of the animal rights association Adda, which regards bullfights as torture.

Catalonia's critical attitude towards bullfights has been attributed to its liberal culture. The region seeking increasing autonomy from Spain also tends to distance itself from things seen as typically Spanish.

New law on Animal Welfare in Spain
By h.b.
Sun, 28 Jan 2007, 13:51

The new Spanish law on Animal Welfare will include fines for those who ill-treat domestic pets.

Fines of upto 100,000 ? can be imposed on individuals or companies.

The new law was approved in the Cabinet on Friday, and controls the transport, upkeep and conditions of animals on farms and in medical research.

The most serious abuses will be considered as unjustified ill-treatment where the 100,000 ? will apply.

The law makes no mention of bullfighting however, or the use of animals in traditional Spanish fiestas.

Spain 14 April 2007
Subsidies and Written Declaration 0002/2007

As you may know, tomorrow (April 15th) is the last day for MEPs to sign the Written Declaration, although in reality no more signatures would have been added after Friday.

The official figures of the EU state that 204 MEPs have signed, meaning that we were well short of the required number of 393. Regretably bull breeders will continue to receive subsidies paid for by all of us European tax payers.

It must be said that this declaration, although well intentioned, failed due to being over-ambitious. Had it concentrated solely on ending subsidies to bull breeders, we have little doubt that it would have easily achieved the required signatures.

Many MEPs have written to us that they are opposed to bullfights yet felt unable to sign because the declaration also called for the banning of bullfights, something beyond the authority of the EU.

They also state that if the objective was only the end of the subsidies they would have signed without any hesitation.

Meanwhile bull breeders that used to deny receiving these subsidies now have the nerve to not only admit that they receive them, but that they are their second source of income.

This admission gives you an idea of the amount of money they receive and the damage they would have suffered if these subsidies had been banned.

We all make mistakes. That is how we can learn for the future. Ending bullfights will not be done quickly or easily - it is a long hard fight that must be fought one battle at a time.

We have always said that we must fight on two fronts. We must always continue to contain bullfighting by preventing it from spreading to other countries, and we must always try to hit them where it hurts them most - their pockets. The day that bull breeders and bullfighters stop receiving any kind of subsidies and have their corporate sponsorship curtailed, we will be halfway to attaining our goal of ending this barbarity.
